"We're not running against Obama," Steele said. "We're runnign against a career congress who spends out of control, taking away the future of our kids and grandkids. That's what I find in the district. The independents and the conservative Democrats are running toward a candidate like me because they understand it cannot continue the way it is now. Spending has got to stop."

Health care reform is another important issue for the Ann Arbor cardiologist.

"We work off the Hippocratic Oath: Do no harm. And unfortunately, this bill does a lot of harm," Steele said, referring to President Barack Obama's new health care reform bill.

Steele said he'd work to repeal what has been dubbed "Obamacare" - and rebuild it.
