"We work off the Hippocratic Oath: Do no harm. And unfortunately, this bill does a lot of harm," Steele said, referring to President Barack Obama's new health care reform bill.

Steele said he'd work to repeal what has been dubbed "Obamacare" - and rebuild it.

AnnArbor.com: Tea party Republicans rally around Rob Steele's message of cutting big government spending

Steele was described Wednesday night as a candidate who not only is reaching the hearts of voters, but also is literally reaching into their chests and feeling their hearts on a regular basis. Steele said he earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees from U-M by age 23 and has spent the last 29 years working as a physician.

"What we need in Washington, D.C., are people who interface in the community and live under the rules that are passed by Congress, instead of being a career politician who pretty much does whatever they want," Steele said, calling Dingell out of touch with the needs of the 15th District, which stretches from Dearborn through Ann Arbor and south to the Ohio line.

Reality check

Steele and other candidates nationwide have signed a "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" circulated by Americans for Tax Reform, which is the basis for the ad's attack. However, after signers in other states were similarly accused of supporting outsourcing companies, ATR clarified — as did FactCheck.org and the Associated Press — that the pledge does not protect any companies and says nothing about jobs; it simply vows to oppose tax increases.

"It's an endorsement and we're moving forward to Nov. 2," campaign manager Mike Marzano said of picking up Palin's support. "We're working hard and every little bit of help counts."

Marzano said Steele and Palin see eye-to-eye on holding government accountable and cutting "insane spending" in Washington. Steele also has endorsements from prominent Republicans like Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

The "Take Back Congress" rally Wednesday night on the University of Michigan Diag and the Tea Party Express stop on Friday were also mentioned in the article.

MATTHEW DOLAN / WSJ

MONROE, Mich.—Michigan's Rep. John Dingell, currently the longest-serving member of the House of Representatives, says he isn't worried about losing the seat that has been in his family since the Great Depression. But a marked change in his campaign spending patterns and a volley of negative ads against his opponent suggest otherwise.

Turning to 15th District congressional hopeful Rob Steele, moderator David Nixon, the college’s president, quickly corrected himself after inadvertently addressing a question to “Congressman Steele.”

The miscue evoked a wry smile from incumbent U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-15th District), seated to Nixon’s right, and an ovation from Steele supporters among a crowd that filled the college’s La-Z-Boy Center Meyer Theater to near capacity.

Press & Guide: Sidewinder: Dingell, Steele will present their case during debate

"No one is unbeatable these days"

October 15, 2010

Karl Ziomek

With less than a month remaining in the campaign, it will be up to the voters to answer the key question: Is this the point when John Dingell actually can lose a race for Congress?

No one is unbeatable these days. The Dingell camp knows that, and so do supporters of Steele. Anything is a possibility, given the tenor of America’s electorate.

Is Steele the guy to pull it off? He thinks so.
